We are in 1954. The protagonist,Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a cop. Shows tough, determined and rough-although a little disoriented. In protosynantame queasy on a boat, and with him lodged in the collaborator, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo): he shows amiable, adaptable and reliable. The combination seems right. Already from the first notes of threatening and dark, misty sky, we realize that our destination promises not hospitable. No one can rejoice when it comes to the Island of the Damned, the «Shutter Island», an island-fortress, which utilizes the natural (and artificial) of fortification to be used as a maximum security prison on the most dangerous, mentally disturbed criminals. The arrival here is far from pleasant, especially when one arrives with the task of solving the disappearance of a Murderess, which ran away with completely inexplicable way by the institution.

The reception will be equally inhospitable: the Teddy and Chuck forbidden to carry weapons, of any power granted to the Director of the Foundation, while systematically concealed the facts from witnesses. Stripped of all security and safety, voluntarily go through the electrified rails of the foundation and begin their investigation, are sitting completely at the mercy of mysterious, ambiguous Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley) and radical scientific practices. And there, alone against all, this blocked the storm to a cursed island where all the challenge you to leave, they will begin to unfold a thread that rather than clarify the mystery will lead them deeper and deeper into a maze that is becoming darker, more and more stuffy, more and more paranoid. A labyrinth where inmates of the institution, the enemy guards, doctors and cryptic mysterious coincidences, interlocked with the troubled mind festering Teddy, who is tormented by memories of the bloody war and the wounded past.

Hallucinations, memories and conspiracy theories, a piece of Mahler played consistently in the gramophone, a recurring nightmare and obsession, the obsessions cursed Teddy will step up the plot, and together with a masterly manner, will escalate the emotions and intensity. Fear no longer hiding in tents, but lies across the atmosphere, watering every shot. The evocative music, the dark, labyrinthine corridors in and out of the steep cliffs, the selected relaxing characters (perfect casting and performances from Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer) and fluid roles between good and evil are no longer and grab us by the other side of the screen and we have excluded the 'Island of the Damned ", and do not know if we want to go running in terror along with Teddy, or if you want to stay there, do not ever leave the cinematic masterpiece universe who coined by Martin Scorsese.
And reminds us, quite simply, because it is one of the greatest living filmmakers today: not just for the memories he gave us, but for those who continue to create.
