It's a well known fact that Nicolas Cage ruins every film he touches. It still amazes me to this day that the buffoon has an Oscar at home on his mantle. This film is no exception. Despite being a classic hostage-terrorist threat caper, Cage fails to even prove his worth on the comic cliche scales.
The supporting cast is astounding, with heroes such as Ed Harris, David Morse, John McGinlay and the demi-god himself, Michael Biehn trying their hardest to drag this film out of the clutches of auto-fail Cage. They are the only reason this film gets such a high rating. Cage's performance as a tactically inept scientist is laughable. We know he wouldn't be much good in a real life action situation, but making Cage the brains of the operation must have been an in-joke.
