A war movie seen through the home front. Rather a little late for a war movie, so it thrived for emotion rather than war action, since there are more emotional conflict back where the loved ones await. A solid drama, love story and tragedy that even overwhelms the poetry of the movie. Yes, the cranes flying is poetic, but the story had no need for it, poetry were in the eyes, hearts and minds of the characters and Kalatosov directs the camera with a sense for all familiar heartbreaks.
