I respectfully disagree. I rate this movie a 10/10. Its a masterpiece. It even has potential to get into top 10 on IMDB. Yet I turned off Adaptation about 40 minutes into it. I found it quite boring, although to be fair, I despise Nicholas Cage with a passion, so that could be why I never could get into Adaptation.
I read the screenplay for this movie while it was still in production and found it more entertaining than the movie. It was easier to follow the non-linear jumps and the repetition that is only revealed at the end of the movie was more apparent in the screenplay. I love Charlie Kaufman but I am not a huge fan of Gondry. Spike Jonze is better.
Gondry and Jonze are so similar. They both started off with Bjork, Chemical Brothers, and other music videos, and they both have just one or two hits each. Jonze has the amazing 'Being John Malkovich' and 'Adaptation', and Gondry has his 'Eternal Sunshine' and is finishing up 'Be Kind, Rewind' which looks like it has potential to be an Oscar contender, or at least a blockbuster hit. The thing is both of Jonze's hits were written by Kaufman (as well as Gondry's hit - damn, Kaufman is good), but 'Be Kind, Rewind' was fully written by Gondry, so we'll have to wait and see if this kid's got writing talent as well, which might give him the edge over Jonze.
As for non-linearity, well, if that bothers you, I can see that may be why 'Eternal Sunshine' didn't win you over, but I'm a big fan of non-linearity, in 21 Grams and in Memento it was done to perfection, so that might be why I list 'Eternal' as a perfect 10.
Anyways, its good discussing this with you. Cheers.

You forgot "The Science of Sleep" which I don't think I will see. Just not interested.
