Review of Les Misérables

An average movie

Even though the ratings were pretty good concerning this movie, I was rather skeptical about it. I guess it has to with the fact that I'm French and this story has been done to death if you ask me (a musical version is even coming out in 2012 with another all-star cast...) and Bille August who did manage to get the Golden Palm twice in a row hasn't managed to deliver anything great after that, so I was rather cautious concerning this flick. Eventually, it was not bad but still nothing mind-blowing though. I mean, you have a great cast (Liam Neeson, Claire Danes, Uma Thurman, Geoffrey Rush, Toby Jones) and they all delivered some decent performances. Furthermore, the costums and sets looked fine and the directing was decent, that's for sure. Still, it was such a faithfull adaptation (at least, according to what I have in mind, I'm not sure I have even read the book...), it wasn't bad but just rather dull and I can't say I was really entertained. Still, it remains a well made drama with a great cast and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
