I think Holden Caulfielld had movies all wrong, because he was shown all the wrong films, and never got the chance to see any genuine masterpieces. Show him a Tarkovsky film and he'd shut up about all that "the pictures are phony" crap. I think he got this incredibly wrong assumption by watching movies like "Forrest Gump". Hell, that movie he talked about, with the blind duke, was probably it's generation's equivalent to "Forrest Gump"; a shitty, phony film for shitty, phony people. It tugs relentlesly at the heart strings, but it's lack of genuine emotion keep it from ever achieving any sort of resonance. It's characters are 2D cardboard cut outs designed to fit every cliche because, well, cliches work for the simple minded, and if you use enough of them, you'll really really impress the simpe minded. Probably worst of all is the comic relief

I don't think Zemeckis is very talented, but at least the "Back to the Future" films could raise a smile if you're in the mood for somethng dumb that doesn't evoke any thought, whereas "Forrest Gump" should evoke nothing but unpleasentness and hatred for those around them in any non phoney
