FLCL is a special type of animation, Fooly Cooly is special because it could've been only made as an animation. I don't mean because of the robots or anything else like that. Furi Kuri has this strange spastic energy that never slows down, even during the slower moments your hearts still racing from the last thing and is getting ready for the next spastic thing. I am a fan of things that are constantly moving.
The closest thing I can compare Maru Raba to is Edgar Wright's 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' the way that movie and this OVA are edited and directed make it seem like everything happens one after another like the entire thing actually happened in their respective run-time (Scott Pilgrim feels like it happened in about 2 hours and Faisuta feels like it happened in 30 minutes) Of course there are better things to compare Burabure like Dead Leaves or End of Eva, but not many American movies would be willing to go these extents to appear spastically insane while also being genius. Which is weird because I think American is more insane than Japan, but that's a different subject. I'd like to go into the genius storytelling of Furi Kura, but I don't think I have the right chops to go into that. Frankly, I understand technical aspects more than I do symbolism. Sorry.
FLCLimax, in short, is a genius story told by Mad Men. The only, ONLY, problem I can see in this series is that some people will see it as ‘brainless’ or ‘flashy and nothing else’ and on some level I can agree that that is what one or two scenes are, but I believe that those add to experience. If you did somehow think that during the series, I would heavily implore you to watch it again, and try to appreciate how much animation, effort, and imagination went into this show.
I don’t know how to end this so I’ll just say that Little Busters is the best song on the soundtrack for this show. But it’s like 10 in a series of 9.9s, go look it up on YouTube. You know what? Look up the entire soundtrack on YouTube it’s like the best soundtrack for any movie or TV show I promise.
