Description

Episode 06, Season 1.
"Dog Day Afternoon": (3/31/86) Pt. 2

The family is divided on whether to put their sickly old dog to sleep. Mr. Slauson: Al Fann.

(Anyone else notice that "Valerie's Family" seemed more torn up about the dog dying than they did when "Valerie" died?)

*SPECIAL NOTE* This is NOT from an original NBC airing but it is the full UNEDITED episode. About 15 years ago, a local station (Channel 11) in the Boston area aired episodes of the series in unedited form for about a month and I was fortunate to get a few episodes recorded that I didn't have in my collection. The episodes they aired were voted upon by viewers (I did not participate in the voting unfortunately).

As a result, the eps were not aired in any sensible order, although to my delight most episodes that were chosen were the "Valerie" episodes. But it was odd that one day they'd show a "Sandy" episode where Valerie was deceased and then the next day Valerie would appear alive and well. To make matters worse, there was never any write up about which episode was airing so it was hit or miss a couple of times. Often they'd show an episode I already had.

Also, they used the abbreviated theme song, which I despise with a passion. I understand their reasoning for doing so however. Small stations need to edit shows so that they can fit more commercials to sponsor their station and keep it afloat. Channel 11 figured it'd be better to split up the theme song and leave the actual episode uncut instead of butchering the episode itself. So I forgive them for doing that, for what it's worth.

In any case, I'm shoehorning the full theme from the Pilot episode of "Valerie" in place of the syndicated cut version of Season 1's theme. The drawback is that the pilot theme did not have Christine Ebersole included, so she's left out here. I hope this doesn't impede anyone's enjoyment of the episode.
