Description

ITV 1981. The PIR started life as a car accessory called the "Night Watchman".I had to park my car on the road at night. I want a way of turning on it's parking lights when anything came near it! Whilst in California, I suggest to my marketing agent who had a driveway, that I modify a "Night Watchman" to turn on his driveway lights. It was renamed the ADL (Auto Drive Light) Launched in the USA by Gateway Scientific under license to me. It was immediate copied in China and imported to USA. I didn't have the resources to fight everyone, so even Gateway Scientific carried on making it and stop paying their license fee.
Early on, I offered it to Smiths Industries in the UK. They rejected it, saying "No one will ever want it, when all you have to do is leave your lights on when you go out" Boy did they get it wrong!!!
