William Tell is the most noble testament to freedom this side of Fidelio. Here in the first scene the Fisherman gondolas (is that a verb?)in singing his simple sunny song. Tell muses on political oppression. This is perhaps the most challenging tenor comprimario part in opera. The fisherman comes in cold and sings a bunch of high Cs. He then essentially disappears.
