Description
William Tell is the most noble testament to freedom this side of Fidelio. Here in the first scene the Fisherman gondolas (is that a verb?)in singing his simple sunny song. Tell muses on political oppression. This is perhaps the most challenging tenor comprimario part in opera. The fisherman comes in cold and sings a bunch of high Cs. He then essentially disappears. This is another reason why Tell is so seldom mounted. Not only is Arnold, the lead tenor, impossibly difficult so too is this ... |
