In 1699 Duke Philippe de Nevers (Hubert Noël) is an influential and popular man who is married to a beautiful wife called Isabelle (Sabine Sesselmann). His rival Philippe de Gonzague (François Chaumette) hates him enough to organise an assination attempt on him.
The Duke is travelling with Henri de Lagardère (Jean Marais) when de Gonzague's henchmen ambush them. Lagardère escapes but his friend is killed. Lagardère rescues the Duke's young daughter and swears revenge on his killers.
Together with his old buddy Passepoil (Bourvil), Lagardère raises the little girl in Spain while also secretly making regular return visits to France to track down his friend's murderers. Upon finding them, he confronts and puts them to the sword one by one until only their former leader is left. Finally he discovers that Philippe de Gonzague is the man for whom he is looking.
