The current Princely Family of Monaco is from a branch of the Grimaldi family descended from Princess Louise-Hippolyte who married Jacques de Matignon in 1715. He changed his name to Grimaldi for the marriage but, nonetheless, when he became Sovereign Prince of Monaco with the support of France upon his wife's death there was considerable discontent in the wider Grimaldi clan who opposed a Matignon rather than a Grimaldi ruling the principality.
