Mia was born on January 24, 2000 in Oskemen, Kazakhstan, and was adopted on July 7th, 2000 at the age of 6 months by John Shand and Penny Phillips. On January 10th, 2009, Mia was diagnosed with an inoperable, malignant brain tumor (DIPG), just two weeks before her 9th birthday.
