Description

Born Princess Charlotte, daughter of King Leopold I of the Belgians, she married the Austrian Archduke Maximilian von Hapsburg who became Emperor of Mexico in 1864. From then on she was known as Empress Carlota and was known for being industrious, driven and extremely devoted to her husband. When the French abandoned Mexico she went to Europe to try vainly to get help. Her husband was killed and she went hopelessly insane, living in seclusion in Belgium until her death in 1920.
