Robert Mitchum is fantastic as Philip Marlowe. The aging detective's quest for Velma, a faded memory from a hopeless love affair, leads him into a web of deceit. Sylvia Miles got an Oscar nomination for her two scenes as an aged chorus girl. Love this movie.
