The 10th Kingdom

Well, at least this thing knows it’s faintly ridiculous at times, while at others it hints at a more adult, dark fantasy epic that’s bubbly under the surface. I think I would have preferred if the later had come rushing up, taking hold of the Bee Gees singing trolls and made them less kitsch. (Not a knock against the brothers Gibb, cause lord know I love them.) In fact, The 10th Kingdom would ... read more

Description: Amazon.com This epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning writer of Gulliver's Travels was a ratings bust on television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the Fairy Tale Zone; nine kingdoms populated by charact ... " The Ups: Ambitious universe. A cute romantic leading duo. Rutger Hauer has a good part as The Hunter. One of the best title sequences of all time. It has a peculiar kind of charm. The Downs: Too much "safe" comedy, especially in the first episode. The Trolls are annoying and pigheaded. The effects are dated. The sequel that is pretty clear was planned at the end was never made, especially sad now as we have a lot of series and films set in this kind of universe."
