The Rankin/Bass team brought us the amazing Rudolph Red-Nosed Reindeer, as well as special gems such as Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Little Drummer Boy, and Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey, but I think "Frosty the Snowman" is just a holiday cash-cow they rushed thru. Although general perception of 1969's Frosty the Snowman seems to suggest that it's a beloved Christmas classic, this 30-minute TV special is astonishingly undeserving of such a reputation. It's a moderately clever expansion of the song of the... read more

We picked up a box set of Christmas TV specials primarily for this & Rudolph, after my daughter started geeking out every time she saw anything remotely Christmas-y. She watched this once that I know of in November & then multiple times in December."

Although general perception of 1969's Frosty the Snowman seems to suggest that it's a beloved Christmas classic, this 30-minute TV special is astonishingly undeserving of such a reputation. It's a moderately clever expansion of the song of the same name, but this Rankin/Bass-produced slice of Yuletide animation lacks the suitable qualities to make it a holiday mainstay. Frosty the Snowman is dangerously drab, occasionally awkward, without a worthwhile message, and lacking in worthwhile heart and comedy. It has a few charms, but it has not aged gracefully.

Thoughts: Er, this sucked. I had heard good things about it and expected a classic piece of Rankin/Bass animation history, but it was soulless, laughless and pointless.

First off, where is that beautiful puppet/stop-motion animation found on most other Rankin/Bass TV specials? Instead, we have a cheaply-animated cartoon, using many repetitve scenes and frames, and the story is so weak and cheezy the only thing this has going for it is the catchy tune. But even that, I can remember most of other songs from other Rankin/Bass specials, but this one, I only remember the Frosty song. I'm not a 100% positive, but I think its the only one in the show, repeated over 3 or 4 times throughout. Pure ” read more
