Should be funny, but its not.

The premise of this show made me expect pure gold, but instead i felt nothing but repugnance for Black Books. My sister kindly bought me the first season for my birthday/christmas. It took me an absolute age to watch it, much like most dvd presents i receive, and when i finally got around to slapping it on, i watched a couple of episodes and put it straight on amazon (Again...much like most dvd presents i receive) Its not that i didnt get the humor, or that i am barren of wit. It was just purely not a funny program, what jokes there were i guess i saw coming, anything else just made me sigh. Turns out Dylan Moran can only play 1 style of character, usually he is good at it, not in this! Bill Bailey is very hit and miss in my opinion and he missed by a long shot on this occasion. Fantastic new(er) comedy!

This is probably one of my favourite modern British comedies to date. Black Books brough a fresh brand of comedy that is made up of elements found in older sitcoms, but is altogether more of a result of the combination of Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran's respective brands of comedy, which is backed up so well by the role of Tamsin Greig. Both bring their own personal wit and humour to the show and the result is a fantastical mix of physical, absurd and simple humours and jokes.

Who wouldn't love a show about a grumpy Irish bookstore owner and his two friends? A definite recommendation to fans of British comedy.
