Okay, seriously since nobody is posting and this is only the 10 nominations...
7. Disturbed
Very mainstream, most if notall people have at least heard of them, really, you either like all of their songs or hate them with a passion... They have a very angsty and aggressive feel to their music, basically(In my opinion) A form of light metal(Perhaps Nu Metal?)
Favorite Album: I'd have to say Indestructible
Favorite Song: Land of Confusion

8. Dream Theater
One of the successful bands in the progressive metal scene, Dream Theater are technical, melodic and shredding instrumentalists masters that bring a sense of awe in most songs they release.
Plus I feel like they are musical geniuses that are just screwing around and make it look easy.
Best Album: Octavarium

9. Dropkick Murphys
Hailing from Massachusetts, Dropkick Murphys are one the of the most popular and well know Celtic punk bands today bringing the normal fast punk sound but adding bagpipes, tin whistles, and lyrical theme that could fit in any Irish pub.

10. Bob Dylan
I don't think there will ever be another artist like Bob Dylan. Imagine a one-man folk band reaching such heights of critical acclaim in today's day and age, it just wouldn't happen. His topical lyrics would probably be more effective than several modern history lessons. An extremely important and prolific artist.

1. Brian Eno
First rate and front line (avant-garde literally) electronic and rock-music. Thumbs up and hat off. Great musicians but I've listened to only few albums so far from his large discography.

Another one of my all-time favourites (I have a tattoo to prove my devotion). This is where noise was born! Early metal-on-metal Neubauten is the best, with a raw and animalistic sound that was completely new at the time of the band's conception. Undeniably influential to other noise, industrial and experimental artists. One act I've been dying to see forever, it's just too bad they mostly play Europe.

5. Explosions in the Sky
This band got me into post-rock with their soaring instrumentals and creative soundscapes. I don't listen to them as much any more, and now infinitely prefer Do Make Say Think, but I still can't forget the contribution they made in opening my eyes to a new genre and broadening my musical horizons!
Favourite Album: The Earth is not a cold dead place
Favourite Song: The only moment we were alone

On a quick note, what about the #'s and Symbols bands(Like 311 and others that start with numbers?)
Posted : 4 years, 2 months ago at Mar 16 19:01 -
Numbered bands will come at the end, like they did in the cinema list. If there is really enough symbolic bands... then I guess they will come after that!

a Stoner Doom Metal pioneer in a bunch of many. A very nostalgic pick for me because this band invited me to this specific kind of Metal. I'm glad that they are coming to Finland this Fall :)

It's one of my favorite bands, but I think it's kinda hard to talk about them here, 'cause the most important thing about their music, for me, are the lyrics. They use a lot of schemes and other figure of speech, like alliteration, assonance and antithesis. The earlyer albuns are more... experimental, I don't know, more noisy, but the recent ones are "cleaner".
Favorite album: [Link removed - login to see] (ok, it's something by MTV, but it can give you an idea of the band's history.)

Strong, Beautiful, uplifting and moving. Elgar crafts songs that compliment and mould every mood to his notes.
He always made me regret playing the Violin instead of the grand Cello.

5. From Monument to Masses
Sample-plundering post-rockers who seem hell bent on capturing the most anti-establishment sound bytes from random sources. The results usually range from inspirational rallying cries to examples of chilling oversights by the US government. Always interesting stuff.

7. Fleetwood Mac
Appearing in many top 50 rock band lists, this groups most successful periods were the late '60s with Blues music and '75-'87 with more pop-orientated songs. As the band line-up changed, so to did their music, which kept each album fresh and new. Just wish 'Albatross' had appeared on an album so I could nominate that one!

8. The Flaming Lips
I'm never in a mood where I wouldn't fancy listening to The Flaming Lips.
Optimistic bubble sounding music supported by electronic beeps supplies them with happy tunes to sing along to.
Of course, as must be expected, their lyrics often aren't as flippant and surreal as they may first sound. As the band addresses issues in our world, but they do so without taking themselves too seriously. Which is a nice change :-)

Pure EBM industrial. This is THE band I think of when given the sub-genre EBM (electronic body music). They pioneered the way for other EBM and industrial artists and some members are still involved in several electro-related scenes today. I remember blasting this in my car in my teenage years and it brings me back to those days when I put any of their albums on now. Ah, good times. :)

Great idea Grand Assault!
Number 10
FOUR TET: I remember saying a prayer once that this electro wizard would release a second album after falling in love with his first so hard. When it came... well it was average, but he is a proven talent anyway and seeing him live is a super experience! And i know you love him so you will have to add him to this list!!!

1. Garbage
Their debut album, Garbage, was an unexpected smash, selling over 4 million copies and certified double platinum in the UK, USA and Australia. Garbage won the Breakthrough Artist award at the 1996 MTV Europe Music Awards. This really is music for a certain mood, and in 1995 it fitted the bill perfectly for me. Today as a mature nerd/geek I can still appreciate Shirley Mason, this time as a T1000 Terminator (The Sarah Connor Chronicles - TV Series).

4. Go Betty Go
All female band, they sounded to me like they weren't just following a cliche and generic style common in pretty much every single girl band in existence. IE mega butch lesbians like Kittie or ironic man hating bull shit like Alanis Morriset. These girls just sung about living in LA and I liked their leads voice (though my mrs hates it... and she is probably right.). Sadly the lead left the band and now they have a mundane sounding generic girl band lead singer who ruined the whole thing for me.
Fav Album: Nothing is more
Fave Song: C'mon (First heard it on burnout 3, which made me download their album)

5. Godspeed You! Black Emperor
There are few albums that I can lose myself in, Godspeed seem to know how to make music that takes hold and grabs you until it chooses to let you go. Godspeed have hit the nail on the head, creating stunning orchestral tracks that can go on for 30 minutes or more, they're geniuses and the pinnacle of their genre, so much so, they've probably redefined it.
Favourite Album: Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada

An incredible band comprised of hundreds of different musicians from every different walk of life you can think of. 1. The Hives
Swedish rock band that first grabbed the public's attention in the early 2000s as a prominent group of the garage rock revival, playing garage punk. Their mainstream success came with the release of the "greatest hits" album 'Your New Favourite Band', featuring their most well-known song "Hate to Say I Told You So". I saw this group when they first played the UK and later in Toronto on tour with Maroon 5, they were and remain awesome!

First, I wanna thank Grand Assault for the invite to the thread. i've been really busy lately, but this looks like a great thread! My "H" nomination might be really obvious, but it ought to be mentioned...
Jimi Hendrix.
Arguably one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time, his song-writing is often overshadowed by his guitar. My favorite album is Electric Ladyland. That record is a trip. If you've got a rainy afternoon and nothing to do, put it on and tune out. Wonderful stuff. So sad that he passed so soon. If Band of Gypsies is any indication, he had so much more to offer.
Favorite Song: "The Burning of the Midnight Lamp" from Electric Ladyland

Mexican electro/EBM I was a big fan of when industrial was basically all I listened to. I still enjoy pulling out [Link removed - login to see] every once in a while for a bit of nostalgia and it's still just as beat-heavy and aggressive as I remember it to be.

Welcome back, g0!
Hs are pretty slow going... my library is pretty sparse on this letter, too.
6. Hymie's Basement
This band is just weird and wonderful. They're responsible for some pretty unorthodox tunes with ponderous lyrics and a guy with the most distinctive vocals I've probably ever heard. Been listening to just one of their songs for a few years, before I recently bothered to check out the rest of their eponymous album. Good stuff.

ANBU Sasaki: The All-American Rejects go under A and that was a while ago.
7. Gustav Holst
One of the best composers from the early 1900's, Holst had many influences but created wonderfully haunting melodies with use of unorthodox metre.
Favorite Suite: The Planets
Favorite Song: Mars: The Bringer of War

8. Herman's Hermits
"I'm Into Something Good" reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 13 in the US in 1964. Why do I like them, the band has a double H title, meaning we are one step closer to getting to I's. But more then that they suit Listal as The Hermits appeared in several movies, including When The Boys Meet The Girls (1965) and Hold On! (1966). They also starred in the film Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter (1968) and were one of the performers in Pop Gear (1965). Many of the movies included at least one single by the band, typically of the same name as the movie - helps being signed to a movie/record company!
