The greatest live album of all time is The Who - Live at Leeds.
What makes this performance so great is Pete Townsend's guitar work. He can make his guitar sound like 10 guitars. The album features some of their early hit singles that were originally produced with Keyboards, overdubbed guitars, horns, and other instruments. This presented a challenge for a 3 piece group to reproduce these songs in a live setting. As a result, Townsend had to play a lot of extra guitar fills and riffs to flesh out the tunes. He actually plays lead and rythm on the same guitar. It is an amazing performance.

The Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East was another historic live recording. It was the album that finally gave Duane and the others national attention.

What about Band of Gypsys by Jimi Hendrix?
That alone is an incredible live album of Hendrix not doing older songs at the time.

Live at Leeds is my second favorite live album, but I consider Bob Dylan's Royal Albert Hall Concert to be the most important historically. Dylan performed after releasing two of the greatest albums ever made : Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.
