The band and its membership went through a number of re-configurations between 1968 and 1974, achieving their current form when Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey in July 1974, two weeks before the group's first U.S. tour.
Since the release of the band's self-titled debut album in March 1974, Rush has become known for the instrumental skills of its members, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental concerns.
Musically, Rush's style has changed over the years, beginning in the vein of blues-inspired heavy metal on their first album, then encompassing hard rock, progressive rock, and a period with heavy use of synthesizers. They have been cited as an influence by various musical artists, including Metallica, Primus, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Listal's A to Z library of favourite bands (241 person items)"Nominated by 4Gypsies
There are plenty of reasons as to why Rush is so huge around the world. Sadly in the USA they're not as appreciated but they'll catch on. The only trio on this planet to produce such a monstrous sound, it's amazing. Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of drummers have been influenced by the great Neil Peart. Rush's technicality is almost un-matchable and I love hearing them whenever I get a chance. See them live! I know I want too XD

Bands/artists I respect but don't like (14 person items)"Why I respect them: Rush have always sounded like Rush and always will. The fact that they've survived as long as they have without compromising their sound helps me respect them. Also Les Claypool is a huge fan of theirs, and since I respect him as a musician I respect his influences too.
Why I don't like them: Geddy Lee's voice irritates the living hell out of me."

Trent Reznor - The Man, His Bands, Influences & Co (257 person items)"In the 2010 documentary "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" Trent Reznor sais that the band is one of his major childhood influences and that he considers Rush to be "one of the best bands ever". Their album "Signals" showed him how keyboards could be introduced into hard rock."
