Rick Moranis was born Frederick Alan Moranis to a Jewish family in Toronto, Ontario. As a boy, he spent his summers at Camp New Moon, located in Baysville, Ontario, north of his native Toronto. During his last summer as a camper, Moranis achieved his Master Canoeist's award, qualifying him to teach canoeing.
In the 1970s, he worked (using the stage name Rick Allen) as a disc jockey at various radio stations in Toronto, including CFTR, CKFH, and CHUM-FM. Together with Ken Finkleman, he tried his hand at stand-up and did some comedy for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He followed that with his work at SCTV, enjoying particular success portraying "Bob" of Bob and Doug McKenzie. Doug was played by Canadian actor Dave Thomas. His other memorable SCTV characterizations include motor-mouthed film producer Larry Siegel, terminally-ill rock star Clay Collins, smooth-voiced video deejay Gerry Todd, cool Leutonian pop star Linsk Minyk, kid-brother amateur comic Skip Bittman, head cheese butcher Carl Scutz, and morning homily intellect Rabbi Karlov.
In 1983, he began his movie career with Strange Brew, which focuses on the McKenzie Bros. as they start working at a brewery, where an evil brewmeister plans a hostile takeover after killing the owner's father. The movie has since become a cult favorite, and Moranis went on to do several more movies, such as Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
In the mid-80's, Steve Martin held a surprise wedding for him and his wife Ann Belsky-Moranis, a scenery designer. Sadly, the marriage was cut short due to Ann's death from liver cancer in February 1991. He has two children from their marriage, Ariel and Josh.
In 1997, Moranis retired, but has since done some voice-over work for the 2003 Disney film Brother Bear as Rutt the moose, with Dave Thomas as Tuke the moose, and they have reprized their roles in the 2006 sequel.
