The Best Cooking Show.

Posted : 3 months ago on 5 April 2008 06:50 (A review of The Best)

The Best is perhaps my favourite cooking show ever. I don't know what it is about it but I absolutely love this show. Maybe it's watching the three chefs prepare the dishes in the laid-back atmosphere of their kitchen. Or maybe it's the way the chefs help each other prepare the dishes. The Best promotes itself as a competition but if it is it's a very friendly competition.

I do wish The Best had stayed on air for longer. I would have loved to see more then the ten episodes made.

Not Your Average Everyday Procedural.

Posted : 3 months ago on 5 April 2008 06:37 (A review of Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service)

NCIS is currently one of my favourite scripted shows on tv. It's definitely not your everyday crime show. This show's just as much about the characters as it is about the crime of the week, if not more so. That's one of my favourite things about NCIS actually, that it focuses on how people who are so different from each other work together. What with main characters being the goth lab tech, the English doctor, the hard ass leader, the movie buff playboy, and the IT geek. NCIS is also a show that brings the funny. When I first got into the show I kept asking myself 'Is this show being this hilarious on purpose'?

One of the most memorable quotes -
"NCIS? Is that anything like CSI?"
"Only if you're dyslexic."

Brotherly love.

Posted : 3 months ago on 5 April 2008 12:12 (A review of Band of Brothers (Mini-series))

Band of Brothers is a ten-part miniseries which documents the exploits of Easy Company during their World War II campaign. Veterans of the parachute regiment begin most episodes regaling tales of their experiences during the war, though their identities are not revealed until the very end of the series.

The show begins with the recruits undergoing basic training for the upcoming allied invasion of Europe in their Toccoa training camp. It chronicles their adventures through the Normandy airborn landings, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of Bastogne right through to the end of the war, the discovery and liberation of a concentration camp and the capture of The Eagle's Nest complex in Austria.

The show is amazing. It follows a selection of believable and human characters who never ceased to acquire my deepest respect. It is impossible to feel apathetic towards any of the major roles and after almost every episode I found myself rushing toward the internet in the hope of finding out that certain characters had indeed survived the brutal war. The linchpin and commander of Easy company - Richard Winters - is a charming and charismatic character that commands reverence and respect at every turn.

The combat scenes are dripping with realism and intensity, managing to hammer home the shocking realities of war and the toll it took on the ordinary young men sent to fight it. Scenes often switch from moments of humour - as the men try to focus on the good of every situation - to desperate struggles for their lives as they find themselves on the receiving end of a relentless artillery bombardment.

Band of Brothers dishes up realism, horror, tragedy and good humour in equal measure throughout, but what makes it so special is the fact that it is based on real stories of real men whose heroism lifted the tyrannical grip of a fascist empire from the green fields of Europe. No matter how modest the veterans of this extraordinary journey are, they're all legends in their own right. Heroes who put most of today's generation to shame.

He discovered an alien planet.

Posted : 3 months, 1 week ago on 31 March 2008 10:26 (A review of The Blue Planet)

In ‘Life of Birds’, to film the mating call of a Lyrebird; a member of Attenborough's team sat, alone in a hot and humid jungle, under a tarpaulin, for 8 hour filming stints, for 2 weeks..All for 5 minutes of footage. Now transfer these difficulties to the filming of 'The Blue Planet', shooting a creature that’s never been filmed before, 4,000 metres below sea level!.

People forget the effort that goes into film documentaries; and Attenborough's undertaking of this series took the most effort yet. The series took five years to make, and filmed in nearly 200 different locations. Much of the footage gathered, depicted behaviours never seen before; further still, a good deal of the animals filmed; hadn't even been discovered. When you considered the amount of painstaking work that went into the series; you can’t help but be impressed.

This series is, in my opinion the pinnacle of its genre. Attenborough filmed never seen before creatures; in the bottom of ocean caverns; deeper than anyone had filmed before. He showed that even the most off the wall and creative act of fiction; could not conjure creatures more unimaginable and wonderful than those who we already share the planet with.

I cannot understand how anyone wouldn’t be impressed by 'Blue Planet', all fact, and as detailed and epic as the Bayeux Tapestry.
