Antidotes (2CD) reviewIndie darlings, Foals, release their much anticipated debut album after what seems like an age of putting out demos and playing live gigs across the country. Formed of former members of the mighty, yet almost completely unknown, Edmund Fitzgerald, I was expecting a sound reminiscent of the heavy, gloomy math rock that the former band pioneered. That isn't the case however, as the music on offer here is far more accessible and poppy than I anticipated. That's not to say it's a bad album. It took me a few listens to begin to appreciate it on the whole, but stand out tracks like Cassius and Balloons were instant hits. In essence, they've put out a bunch of bite sized experimental pop-songs. I really think they could've made more use of their instruments throughout the entire album as the breakdowns in songs such as Heavy Water are amazing and show what talent they have as instrumentalists. The vocals on the other hand are hit and miss, seemingly effective on the songs made for single release, but being too unimpressive for other songs where I wish they'd just let the instruments do the talking. I think the next album will be make or break time for the band, they can either go a bit more leftfield and knock out some amazing tracks, or they could continue with another album like this and not reach their full potential as a band. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Oh, what a voice! She sounds like the saner younger sister of Amy Winehouse, except Duffy is Welsh, not English. She has a beautiful voice, deep and rich. The debut album is awesome pop music, tinged with a little 60s style soul. The songwriting is varied and the production is immaculate. The album just *sounds* so great. The best new album of the year so far. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Great PerformanceNirvana is great loud and unplugged. Nirvana for the most part played their usual songs but was accompanied by the Meatpuppets. Kurts vocals were filled with passion and swept the stage. This performance was one of the best i've ever seen. *Key Songs* *The Man Who Sold The World* *Come As You Are* *Plateau* *Where Did You Sleep Last Night* 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Perfection!Nirvanas second album. Kurt, Krist and Dave were absolute genius in making this album. The strongest song to date is none other than "smells like teen spirit". This album is the voice of our generation, certainly an instant classic. Kurts vocals were brilliant, Hard and Raunchy yet at times soft and soothing. This album will not soon be forgotten. *Key Songs* "Smells Like Teen Spirit" "Come As You Are" "Lithium" "On A Plain" "Polly" "Something In The Way" "Hidden Song" *Personal Note* All the songs on the album are great and worth a listening to, but these are my personal favorites. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Barlow Girl reviewIn my opinion, this is not their best work, but it's definetely got some good songs on it. :D Don't miss out on the beginning of these renowned ladies! :D 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Carly at her best!In 2001, the top 40 music scene was infiltrated with music by Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and other "artists" who felt they had to lipsync their music when performing live. Well Carly Hennessey (or as she's now know on American Idol as Carly Smithson) released a top-notch album in 2001! The songs are very adult-contemporary, and what drew me to them in the first place was her use of curse words and sexual references in pop music. This is a way better album than any of the music she sings on Idol! 2 comments, Reply to this entry
Highlights From The Phantom Of The Opera: The Original London Cast Recording (1986 London Cast) reviewI'm not a fan of the 'sound track' genre; I'm usually the first to criticise it, as music for those who aren't music fans. However; when the score is such a fundamental part of the production, its a different matter. Phantom of the Opera has one of the most famous scores of all musicals. It is the second longest running West End production of all time; to Les Mis. Sung by the amazingly talented Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman; this is a beautiful album from beginning to end, what's more, the tracks run together seamlessly. This is an absolute must have for any Phantom fan. I picked it up for £15 when I was 11; it was 3 weeks worth of pocket money, but I never regretted the spend. Don't tell me you're a phantom fan if you don't own this album. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
