An American actor and director who is best known for his film 'Easy Rider' (1968) - which made him an icon of the counter-culture of the 1960s - and for being a member of one of America's most famous acting dynasties.
His other early films include: 'Tammy And The Doctor' (1963), 'The Victors' (1963), Lilith' (1964), 'The Young Lovers' (1964), 'The Wild Angels' (1966), 'The Trip' (1967) and 'Spirits Of The Dead' (1968) in which he appeared with his sister Jane.
In 1968, Fonda produced and starred in 'Easy Rider' the classic film for which he is best known. 'Easy Rider' is about two long-haired bikers travelling through the southwest and southern United States in a world of intolerance and violence. The Fonda character was the charismatic, laconic "Captain America" whose motorcycle jacket bore a large American flag across the back. Dennis Hopper played the garrulous "Billy". Jack Nicholson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his turn as George Hanson, an alcoholic civil rights lawyer who rides along. Fonda co-wrote 'Easy Rider' with Terry Southern and Hopper, who directed.
In 1971 Fonda made his directing debut with 'The Hired Hand' in which he also starred and in the same year he appeared in the Dennis Hopper-directed film 'The Last Movie'.
His later films include: 'Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry' (1974), 'Race With The Devil' (1975), 'Futureworld' (1976), 'Wanda Nevada' (1979), which he both directed and acted in with his father Henry, and a cameo in 'Cannonball Run' (1981).
Fonda received several awards and nominations for his performance in the film 'Ulee's Gold' (1997) including a Golden Globe Best Actor Award and Best Actor Oscar nomination.
He received further acclaim for his acting work in the TV drama 'The Passion of Ayn Rand' (1999) including a Golden Globe Best Supporting Actor Award and an Outstanding Supporting Actor Emmy nomination.
More recently Fonda appreared as Mephistopheles in 'Ghost Rider' (2007) and in 'Wild Hogs' and '3:10 to Yuma' in the same year.
Fonda wrote an autobiography 'Don't Tell Dad: A Memoir' which was published in 1998.
Currently resides: Livingston, Montana, USA.

Q: But you still love it?
Peter Fonda: “Yes. Well, it forces focus. I ride an MV Agusta. This is an Italian racing motorcycle. It forces focus. You have to be focused and in my life, in this business, focus is hard to find sometimes. So I need to force focus and that's great. The bike takes you on a free road. There's no fences on the roads I ride and I don't ride freeways. That's as much as I can tell you be"
