Nada Surf--New Yorkers Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca and Ira Elliot--have evolved a lot stylistically since their '96 MTV hit "Popular". The Weight is a Gift, their fourth album, is produced by Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla and sees the trio take the more multi-textural approach revealed on their last album Let's Go. The band's breezy pop-rock riffs, catchy hooks, and languorous rhythms are--at their best--infused with melancholy and romance, though the problem remains that for every notable song--the DCFC-esque "Your Legs Grow" and the eerie "Comes A Time" for example--there are a plethora of shapeless tracks that qualify only as background music. The fantastic, punchy "Imaginary Friends", which comes at the end of the album, arrives slightly too late to save TWIAG from being an over-sanitized quest for the perfect pop song. --Paul Sullivan
