Unleashed is the debut album from London-based hip-hop producers Unsung Heroes. As with the first long-players from The Creators and The Nextmen, the guest MCs--Godfather Don, Ken Boogaloo and J-Live--are American. This may not go down well in patriotic quarters, but never mind as Unleashed is pretty good. Instead of being confined to the cell of "misunderstood and under-appreciated" artistic pioneers waving the flag for UK hip-hop, the pair have made an album that should be judged on its own efforts. Less repetitive than The Nextmen and not as gimmicky as The Creators, Unleashed is subterranean beat-and-rhyme material overflowing with experimentation. There are even some decent skits, something that UK hip-hop acts have, prior to this, largely avoided or messed up. The pair's music, primarily weird jazz meets thumping funk, rates well on the bounce metre, especially on "Work It Out" and "What Would You Do". There is a great nine-minute DJ scratch 'n' effects marathon, "Daily Intake", and, generally, the MCs' distinct styles and deliveries support rather than denigrate their efforts. Unleashed definitely stands out as one of the most compelling UK hip-hop albums of 2000. --Reuben Dessay
