Alanis dumps Glen Ballard and overwrites, hyper-verablizes, and weirdly syntaxes all of her lyrics! That’s always been a problem with her, instead of just confessing in her confessional songs, she requires you to put so much effort to fix her Yoda-speak that it can feel more exhausting than anything else. At least the music sounds good. And, at least, she has the kindness to name her songs after what they’re going to be about in an effort to help discern what it is exactly that she is saying. Sometimes it can be adorable and charming though, “21 Things I Want in a Lover” is another list song, but it’s also got some hilariously specific/oddly worded must-haves.
