Kinks is a decent enough debut for any British Invasion band. There’s nothing terribly special about a good deal of its tracks, many sound like long-lost Beatles tracks. But when the Kinks hit a home run, they hit it so far outside of the park that most bands were creating entire careers off of those early ’64 singles. “Kinks is a decent enough debut for any British Invasion band. There’s nothing terribly special about a good deal of its tracks, many sound like long-lost Beatles tracks. But when the Kinks hit a home run, they hit it so far outside of the park that most bands were creating entire careers off of those early ’64 singles. Don’t act like you don’t know every word to “You Really Got Me.” Much like contemporaries the Beatles and Rolling Stones, the album is made up mostly of covers; the Americana R&B/proto-rock styling of Chuck Berry (“Too Much Monkey Business”) and Bo Diddley (“Cadillac”) got a lot of exercise in thanks to those English boys.
