Steve Albini produjo este disco y, como es de esperarse, la batería tiene un lugar prominente en el sonido del disco. Otro elemento que tiene una presencia fuerte es la dinámica loud-quiet-loud que después popularizarían grupos como Nirvana.

Description: Surfer Rosa is the first full-length album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in March 1988 on the British independent record label 4AD. The album's unusual and offbeat subject matter includes references to mutilation and voyeurism; this is augmented by experimental recording, low-fidelity production and a unique drum sound. Surfer Rosa contains many of the themes present in the Pixies' earlier output, including Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico. 100 Greatest American Albums of All Time (100 music items)

"Beautifully weird alt-rock touchstone The Pixies’ angular guitar squalls, menacing bass lines and gripping dynamics made them the model for a decade of alt-rockers. Import-only at first, Surfer Rosa struck an ideal balance between Black Francis’s demented rants and Kim Deal’s melodic silliness, achieving sonic heights few Pixies imitators ever approached. Standout tracks: “Gigantic,” “Where Is My Mind?”"
