Sweetness: the word to describe Sarah Mclachlan. Sweet voice and piano, songs sweetly sung and played. This comes with deep touching lyrics. Although, this is not a depressing album. There are slow and sad songs as "I love you" but some more "up" as "Building A Mystery" and others... Really recommended.
'Angel' was the first song I heard by Sarah McLachlan. It wasn't even from a CD of this album, but from the soundtrack for 'City of Angels' and that song will always have a special place among all her songs for me. There's the requisite number of gorgeously melodic and deeply heartfelt songs here--the addictive "Sweet Surrender," the Hollywood-style ballad "I Love You," the sad, profound "Angel," the flat-out spectacular "Witness." McLachlan's not prolific, but this short, bittersweet album proves again that what she and producer Pierre Marchand do release is cut from the finest of cloth. --Jeff Bateman
"Sarah Mclachlan - Building a Mystery
You come out at night
That's when the energy comes
And the dark side's light
And the vampires roam
You strut your rasta wear
And your suicide poem
And a cross from a faith that died
Before Jesus came
You're building a mystery
You live in a church
Where you sleep with voodoo dolls
And you won't give up the search
For the Ghost in the halls
You wear sandals in the snow
And a smile that won't wash away
Can you look out the window
Without your shadow getting "

"7/15/1997
Sarah toured for 2 1/2 years following her release of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy! Naturally exhausted, she took 6 months off and then began work on this masterpiece. It has a different feel to it than FTE but that's the way with many albums anyway. Still, it's an amazing collection of beautiful songs that just fit together perfectly."

It wasn't even from a CD of this album, but from the soundtrack for 'City of Angels' and that song will always have a special place among all her songs for me. Sarah McLachlan was reaching the heights of her popularity with the release of this album. At just ten tracks long, it's a short album compared to her earlier releases and not nearly as consistent an album as 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy'. It does contain some of her best songs to date.
The highlight, both lyrically and musically, is the opening song, 'Building a Mystery'. Brilliant lyrics and alt rock inspired music that complements her voice make this a winner. She follows it up with 'I Love You', a lovely slow ballad with an atmospheric musical arrangement. The album ” read more
