Quadrophenia was the 1973 follow-up, a disillusioned flashback to the early 60s, when mods engaged in pitched battles with rockers on the Brighton seafront. Pre-dating Trainspotting by two decades in its portrait youthful nihilism, drugs, violence and rock 'n' roll, Songs from Quadrophenia is the soundtrack to the 1978 film based on the original album. The film dropped several numbers, with The Who providing new songs "Get Out And Stay Out", "Four Faces" and "Joker James" (as well as producing re-recorded versions many of the original tunes) to fit the adapted storyline. The vinyl version of the soundtrack included several Motown classics missing from the CD, though this release does include two scene-setters by The High Numbers, before launching into 13 tracks by The Who. There are some rock classics here, with "Love Reign O'er Me" being particularly memorable, though given that the new songs are not up to the standard of those on the original Quadrophenia, that must really be the album to get first. Serious Who collectors will want both, and Songs from Quadrophenia has the bonus of serving as a souvenir of one of the most powerful British films ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin... (more)(less)

""The album that brought back Vespascooters, parkas and uppers: Pete Townshend drew on the Who's roots in the London mod scene of the early Sixties and composed this expansive, messy rock opera about a lonely teenage boy looking for love in the city. It gets even better when you check out the movie.""
