Dream-house pioneer Robert Miles--he of the tinkling pianos and celestial melody--decided to ditch his pop threads and come over all worthy and ethnic for Organik. Whatever the motivation, this, his third album, travels so far leftfield it's in danger of disappearing up it's own concept and never coming back. Over twelve agonisingly pretentious tracks, aided by the likes of world music fusionists, Nitin Sawhney, Bill Laswell and a 20-piece orchestra, Organik takes on us a free form journey with no discernible direction. It's the sound of ponderous, multi layered trip-hop, shrieking electric guitar (really) and turgid, fussy rhythms. Although clearly a talented producer, Miles can't help but over-egg the cake, ladling strings, grating ambient clichés and a maelstrom of ethno-paraphenalia into this lumpy and unmanageable stew. Maybe he thinks it transcends fleeting generic descriptions? He'd be right. --Paul Tierney
