Chicago four-piece OK Go's self-titled debut has all the two-minute power-punk bravado of acts such as the Vines and the Hives, yet this is combined with complex word-play and fulsome glam-rock 1970s-style choruses. Part beat poet, part exuberant rock star, Damian Kulash is a fine frontman, his snarling vocals perfectly suited to bittersweet anthems such as "1000 Miles Per Hour" and "The Fix Is In". The band also make liberal use of samples, such as the grainy hip-hop loop that makes the anti-warmongering song "Hello, My Treacherous Friends" so memorable. This is art rock without pretentiousness, new wave without retro chords and skinny ties. --Lucy O'Brien (Review copyright Amazon.co.uk)
