Linkin Park - Live in Texas (CD/DVD Combo)
Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Like its predecessors Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteroa (2003), Minutes to Midnight flexes plenty of decibel-heavy muscle ("Given Up," "Bleed It Out," "No More Sorrow") and made-to-order, melodic radio fare ("Leave Out All the Rest," "Shadow of the Day," "In Pieces"). But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High." On past efforts, the combination of breezy keyboard, arpeggiated guitar, choral vocals, and a military snare-beat would yield another slab of smarm, here MC Mike Shinoda drops the two best verses of his career, blending vocal styles with singer Chester Bennington for a moving piece that's as welcome a repertorial addition as Linkin Park is ever likely to muster. --Jason Kirk
Its a good album and all but it seems like they are copying iron maiden because this is minuts to midnight and iron maiden has 2 minutes to midnightwich i favor more too.
Can’t shake the disease. Even with the legendary Rick Rubin at the helm, Linkin Park gets on my damn nerves. Yes, they have gotten away from the rap-rock sound, but still come off predictable. There are a few glimmers of hope here—“Shadow of the Day” is their U2 moment and “Hands Held High” is the obligatory patriotic anti-war rap, a sincere effort devoid of a phat beat and hooky chorus. There’s a strange folky feel to songs such as “Bleed It Out’, while the Katrina ode “The Little Things Give You Away” mixes in a touch of electronics, a direction worth exploring. With Minutes to Midnight, Linkin Park shows that they are a little older, a little wiser, yet still have room for improvement.
Not the same stuff as their other two main albums, (both of which I loved BTW) but great stuff none the less. They definitely have more soft songs similar to "My December", and less hard SCREAMING!
I still can't believe that LP finally broke down and put profanity in their songs, it totally ruins good music to hear someone dropping the f-bomb every chorus. However, I personally edited "Bleed It Out" and "Given Up", removing all trace of the offensive words and they are my faves.
(I simply deleted the "Hand Held High" I can't stand that trash against our country's leader)
This album would have been perfect without "Hand Held High" and "In Between", in which Mike's singing I can't stand. He's a good rapper and should stick to what he's good at.
