Although prone to over-reaching themselves (Tales From Topographic Oceans, for example), progressive behemoths Yes have, since inception in the late 1960s, occasionally created some music of quite breathtaking ambition. And--although rarely credited with as much--some sterling pop stuff as well ( it isn't hard to imagine "Time And A Word" hitting the charts in the lush teen hands of some boyband). All bases are covered on this 2-CD in-concert album Live From House Of Blues, dutifully culled from the band's continent-hopping world tour of 1999/2000 and featuring the classic axis of Anderson, Squire, White and Howe together with Muscovite keyboard player Igor Khoroshev. Never ones for such flippant divergences as "jam sessions", these live versions adhere faithfully to the boffin-like complexity of the studio originals and feature everything you need to know about Yes; the essence of which is easily summarised by the Radiohead-trampling, 17 gargantuan minutes of "Awaken" (celestial choirs, jazz-rock frenzy, church organ, kitchen sink, etc.). Held up against such live vintages as Yessongs and Yesshows, Live From House Of Blues does not pale in comparison. --Kevin Maidment (Review copyright Amazon.co.uk)
