For their third album, Lifehouse, with the help of producer John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews), have turned down the amps and left the Creed comparisons behind. In return, the trio are geared to become the smoothest ride on alternative radio. Singer-songwriter Jason Wade has the perfect voice to pitch a 21st century emo-ballad and he's never prettier than on the earnest "Into the Sun." Even when the group ramps up the guitars, the result is modestly subdued as the angst of "We'll Never Know" is sweetly leavened with lush harmonies. Having opened for the likes of Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones and Iron Maiden (?!), Lifehouse have now chosen the quieter path. Fans of their monster hit "Hanging By A Moment" should still find plenty to recognize and relish, but these young men are foregoing any potential head banging for a strong tug at the heart. --Jaan Uhelszki
