One of my favorite images is of Joni Mitchell strumming her acoustic guitar and encouraging everyone to sing along with “Big Yellow Taxi.” I just love knowing that Joni will give up that acoustic guitar of her’s when she dies. Knowing that she just sits around strumming her guitar, or going to a piano in the middle of the night, and writes such personal songs gives me a warm feeling inside. Ladies of the Canyon is her third album, and it contains some of her most famous recordings – “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Woodstock,” “Rainy Night House,” “The Circle Game.” Around this time she began to move towards piano-based writing, and the move helped her create deeper and richer songs.
