For the longest time, singer-songwriter Isaac Brock seemed to exist solely to defy the established rules, forging forward on sheer momentum and ingenuity. Even Pavement looked relatively ordinary in comparison to the band's early releases like 1996's This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. But on Good News for People Who Love Bad News, the frontman sounds like he's finally touching the earth, and the band--minus founding member and drummer Jeremiah Green--follows suit. A relaxed mood prevails, not so much in volume but in attitude. On the follow-up to the group's 2000 major label debut, The Moon & Antarctica, big sloppy melodies battle it out with brass on punky epics like "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty." The lyrics are simpler, the arrangements tamer, but the vitality remains. The prevailing mood is that Modest Mouse has pulled off something extraordinary here: a well-rounded, lovable record that doesn't sound anything like David Gray. --Aidin Vaziri... (more)(less)

"THE WORLD AT LARGE :: Lyrically, this song surpasses any other that Isaac has written. Haunting and poetic, strong images, and so relatable to me personally.
The moths beat themselves to death against the lights
adding the breeze to the summer night.
Outside water-like air was great
I didn't know what I had that day.
Walk a little farther to another to another plan,
you said that you did but you didn't understand.
I know that starting over's not what life's about
but my thoughts were so loud I"
""Float On"
Well, a fake Jamaican took every last dime with that scam
It was worth it just to learn from sleight-of-hand
Bad news comes don't you worry even when it lands
Good news will work its way to all them plans
We both got fired on the exactly the same day
Well we'll float on good news is on the way

"Yep, this band truly is brilliant. As their previous output indicates (especially stuff like "This is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Talk About"), Modest Mouse aren't the most "pop" band out there, but here they do catchy and accessible, but without losing their edge or coming across as sell outs. Tell me how many other bands could do that. I'll alays prefer their weirder stuff, but this is still a great album. Plus, "Float On" is just about the catchiest god damn thing ever"
