Description
This is a rare chance to hear the "fourth world" experimenter's trumpet virtually devoid of its accustomed heavily-processed sound. This album is also Hassell's first stab at playing cover versions, a partially nostalgic exercise in revisiting moments from his childhood, tuning in to unfamiliar sounds over the airwaves. Kavi Alexander's Water Lily Acoustics label is fervently dedicated to purist analogue recording, without any compression, equalisation or other studio trickery. Recorded in Christ The King Chapel, Santa Barbara, California, Hassell is joined by jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson, Indian flautist Ronu Majumdar and that king of ubiquity, guitarist Ry Cooder, also responsible for production duties. For much of the time, Hassell's guests are on board to emit drones, lapping-wave loops, cloudy piano phrases or spangly string caresses, leaving the active soloing to himself and Majumdar, gently implying the melodies of standards such as "Nature Boy", "Poinciana" and "Estate" ("Summer"). Tizol and Ellington's "Caravan" is certainly a favourite, enjoying two different treatments. The whole album shimmers with an opalescent light, profoundly relaxing, but never neutered, new agey or ignorable. --Martin Longley
