The band severed ties with their previous record label after disappointing sales of their previous album, 2000's excellent We Have Come for Your Parents. Even without a deal, though, there was no sign of Chaos' dedication waning. With typical regard for personal wellbeing (that means absolutely none) the frontman maxed out his personal credit cards just to get Death Before Musick in the can. Luckily, it sounds like money well spent. "Hello (One Chord Lovers)" is what Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" would have sounded like if Axl Rose was really as pissed off as he claimed, while "California's Bleeding" is a mini-masterpiece of murderous punk pathology that takes its cue from American outsider touchstones like the Stooges and the Dead Boys, but if anything, concentrates the intensity of the assault. As ever, Chaos' raging anti-establishment lyrics only occasionally gel into any focus amid the maelstrom of reverb-soaked rock guitar--something of a shame, as he sings them with no lack of conviction. Still, the overall effect is agreeably sturdy, and just occasionally, as on "Oblivion Stereo", Amen sound positively heroic. More power to their bruised elbows. --Louis Pattison... (more)(less)

"Bring Me the Heads"
Rediscovered my love for this album this week after using it as fuel for work. I'd forgotten how good it is. My first encounter with Amen was seeing them open a show back in 2000 & I thought they sucked, but this album changed my mind when I heard it. This is easily my favorite song on the whole thing."
