Description: Founded by guitarist/songwriter Greg Ginn, Black Flag exploded out of L.A. in 1981 with a debut album so confrontational that MCA Records refused to release it, stating that Black Flag was "immoral" and lacking "redeeming social value." When the album finally came out on Ginn's own SST label, it was clear why MCA recoiled, as Black Flag's skinhead look and hardcore sound signaled a new chapter in punk--and rock in general. RS: 40 Greatest Punk Albums of All-Time (40 music items)

""We! Are tired! Of your abuse! Try to stop us! It's! No uuuuuuse!" Black Flag walked it like they talked it, perfecting the L.A. hardcore form, with Greg Ginn's demented guitar and Henry Rollins' muscle-bound toxic rage. Damaged got them mixed up with a major label, which refused to release it and denounced it as "an anti-parent record." Which it is — not to mention anti-cop, anti-TV, anti-beer and, what else you got?"

500 CDs You Must Own Before You Die! (500 music items)

"Before gangsta rap, Black Flag were as street as they came. But while new addition Henry Rollins adds doomed-monster charisma to the band’s everydude wall of thrash, the best moments happen when happy adolescent nihilism trumps existential despair. Standout track: “TV Party”"
