Today, for whatever reason, I started thinking about last summer. I was just sitting in a waiting room, occupying myself with my thoughts, when the memory of sittng at my computer on a dull summer day just came to me. I was sitting at my computer, making one those "Favorite Music" lists you see on Listal, and "Silence Kit" was playing. Actually, it wasn't a day I remembered, IT WAS THE WHOLE GOD DAMN SUMMER. Yep, that's how I spent my summer, listening to Pavement and using Listal. Everybody else does something great like take a big trip to the Grand Canyon, or see some awesome family memeber, but I just drowned in my own meaninglessness. A hard and very very monotous excurssion to get through, but thank god this was there to accompany it. Hearing it for the firt time, around the beginning of that break, I hated it. I was just getting out of the "music that's not classic rock sucks" mentality, and my ears weren't quite ready for Pavemtn's brand of making music without any technical ability (but they were ready for Captain Beefheart, go figure). I decided to revisit about a week later, becuase, well, you just do shit like that when you're a music obsessive, and it hit me. It wasn't "these guys can't play, fuck that" anymore, but rather "these guys can't play, this is everything I could ever want from music". I guess there's just something about sloppy instrumentation, shitty vocals, and nonsensical lyrics that you just identify with when you're a teenager. Or at least they do for me. So yeah, this album is pretty important to me I guess I should start talking about the music. Fuck, that's the hard part. Sure, I can drone on endlessly about my summer break, but god dammit, talking about why I like the music here is hard. I guess I just really like the melodies. Poppy melodies with lo fi production is something every indie band does, but Malkmus actually has the talent to back it up. And Malkmus's voice, that's another thing. A lot of people complain because he doesn't sing in a conventional style, but I always loved his weird style. Much like lofi melodies, shit vocals are another indie cliche, but Malkmus's shitty voice is just... better I guess. Man, I' doing an awful job of describing this, I should really stop now 0 comments, Reply to this entry
