Fixated on Egyptology, astro-archaeology, Arabic music, magick, numerical codes of the Kabala and computer bulletin boards, when Black Dog emerged their ideas and sounds were totally fresh. They were a mysterious central London threesome: Ken Downie, a difficult nerd genius who described himself as a "Discordian Pope"; and Ed Handey and Andy Turner (who later became duo Plaid). Alongside Autechre and Aphex Twin, their debut album Bytes was one of the key albums in Warp's inspirational Artificial Intelligence series--one of the best examples of intelligent techno. It was a challenge to the dominant four-four E culture that seemed to be going nowhere and an early warning of the abstract nature of electronic music to come. Compelling electronica with complex, poly-rhythmic beats, Bytes fuses ancient knowledge with future technology. If there was to be a soundtrack for Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel Snow Crash it should be this. A must-have for anyone interested in techno's experimental side. --Sarah Champion
