After the disorganized and often unlistenable Alan Douglas-produced reissues in the '70s and '80s, MCA has been releasing the vast Hendrix archives in an intelligent and methodical manner. Blues is a perfect example, making the case that--on top of everything else--Jimi Hendrix was one fine blues guitarist. Combining the fluid lines of B.B. King with the spikiness of Hubert Sumlin and the crying tone of Elmore James with his usual synapse-frying intensity, Hendrix manages to both honor the music tradition while remaining uniquely himself. These studio outtakes and warm-ups (plus one previously released track, the magnificent "Hear My Train a Comin'") include a playful "Mannish Boy," the slow burn of "Once I Had A Woman," and a metallic "Bleeding Heart." --Steven Mirkin
"
I love this album cover, for the fact it is paying tribute to the Blues Legends. In the picture you see Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, BB King, Slim Harpo, Little Walter, Guitar Slim, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Albert Collins, Freddie King, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, and so on. Why are they in Hendrix? These are the guys that MADE Hendrix. His influences are all over that picture!"
"I've spent a lot of time sitting down and trying to absorb as much from Hendrix as possible. It's so easy to get lost in his talent after just one or two riffs. This is one of those few posthumous Hendrix records I've bothered buying, and sure enough it was worth every penny of it.
From listening to most of these, they sound like outtakes or songs that went on to become something else on Electric Ladyland and even Band of Gypsys. There's an amazing tune in Hear My Train Comin', in both acoustic"
