As a punk and ska fan, this is one of the seminal records from the early 80s. For a good chunk of the album the Brains thrash about and destroy their vocal chords, melody, and instruments. Then, at random/odd intervals, there’s a slow and dubbed out reggae song. From these musing you can hear Fishbone, Sublime, No Doubt, and 311 begin their garage-band phases. And “Sailin' On” has become a surfer-punk anthem, while “Banned in D.C.” and “Pay to Cum” remain the stalwarts of the Bad Brains' back-catalogue, however; that isn’t to say that depending on your mood the album doesn’t play like Sonic Youth finally learned how to play their instruments and wanted to try out reggae (READ: loud, noisy, borderline-cement mixer).
