Blending the vocal athleticism of Van Morrison with the moody rock of The Band, the Counting Crows turned on a whole legion of fans turned off by modern rock. But what sounded fresh soon became stale as dozens of bands flocked to the radio with euthanized versions of the Counting Crows' sound. But you shouldn't hold that against the Crow boys. August and Everything After is a fantastic rock album. Though "Mr. Jones" was the moneymaker, the disc features such standout cuts as the dark lilt of "Anna Begins," the morose "Rain King," and the outstanding U2-meets-Grant Lee Buffalo anthem "Murder of One." Maybe time, and another listen, will heal the damage wrought. --Tod Nelson... (more)(less)

Round Here
Step out the front door like a ghost into a fog
Where no one notices the contrast of white on white.
And in between the moon and you, angels get a better view
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right...

I was down at the New Amsterdam
Staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation
With a black-haired flamenco dancer
You know she dances while his father plays guitar
So she's suddenly beautiful
And we all want something beautiful
Man I wish I was beautiful
So come dance this silence down through the morning
Sha la la la la la la la yeah, uh huh yeah
Curl up, Maria! Show me some of that Spanish dancing

The debut studio album from the Counting Crows! Pure magic! Duritz is a poet after my own heart and the lyrics contain many of the things that have fascinated/plagued me throughout the years...and found there way into my own poetry.
Crows, rain, loneliness, love, the ocean, circuses and more.
This isn't a happy foray, though there is a bit of happy to be found here and there; it's a journey...mystical, metaphysical, spiritual. A long walk through the shadows with the rain washing awa"

Based on the novel Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow
Lyrics:
When I think of Heaven, deliver me in a black-winged bird

In the belly of a black-winged bird
Don't try to feed me
'Cause I've been here before
And I deserve a little more
And I belong in the service of the queen
