Description

Phil Collins was sharpening his pop chops, from his first solo offering to this, the first Genesis album to break the hallowed million-copy mark stateside. But Abacab wasn't entirely about charting Top 40 singles ("No Reply At All," "Man on the Corner," and the title track); it still exhibited some late-stage evidence of a trio ... (more)

Man On The Corner:

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago at May 10 18:42
"Man on the Corner" is a song by British band Genesis, from their 1981 album, Abacab. Lyrics were written by Phil Collins.

The lyrics describe a man who spends his days on a street corner, shouting at the passerby. However, the lyrics speculate he may also know what he's talking about. Backed by a simple drum machine beat, the song takes a musically dark tone.

The music video used to promote the song features Collins, Banks, and Rutherford, playing on stage together, using different colors to illuminate the band.

Keep It Dark Review:

"Keep It Dark" is a song by British band Genesis, off their 1981 album Abacab. A light pop rock song, it describes a man who was kidnapped by mistake ("Seems he met up with a gang of thieves/Who mistook him for a man of means"), only to be freed again. However, he found the world he was taken to was much brighter and happier than the world he normally lives in, as explained in the chorus: I wish that I could really tell you All the things that happen to me And all that I have seen: A world full of people, their hearts full of joy Cities of light with no fear of war, And thousands of creatures with happier lives And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to hide A music video supported the single release of the song, featuring Collins, Banks, and Rutherford in two differ...Read more

No Reply At All Review:

"No Reply at All" is a song by British band Genesis, released on their 1981 album Abacab. The song is well-known among Genesis fans and non-fans alike, and is notable for being the first Genesis song to make prominent use of a horn section, played by the Earth, Wind, and Fire horn section. No Reply at All is arguably the most well-known track off Abacab, and to this day can still be heard on FM radio stations. Like many songs, the meaning of the lyrics are open to interpretation. Many believe it is told from the perspective of a down-on-his-luck guy, similar to the earlier Phil Collins solo song I Missed Again, who can't get a woman's attention despite his numerous attempts, but decides to keep trying. Others, however, believe it was written about bassist Mike Rutherford's daughter, ...Read more

Overview: The album marks a sharp stylistic jump, begun by the band on its preceding album Duke, away from their progressive rock style of the 1970s and toward a more radio-friendly pop music sound. Despite the change, the title track, "No Reply At All", "Keep It Dark" and "Man on the Corner" were all respectable hits as singles and Abacab earned Genesis further fans, with the album hitting UK #1 and US #7, and selling several million copies worldwide and became the band's first Platinum selling album in the US. Another noteworthy element of Abacab is drummer Phil Collins's further refinement of his distinctive drum sound, involving reverberation, noise gates and compression in order to achieve an inordinately loud and authoritative percussive effect. This continued a trend Collins b...Read more
