I gotta be honest with you, I don't know if this film even deserves a "6". I was tempted to give it a "5". Let's just say it is worth a good 5.8. There are several reasons for that rating. One being the story. The story was just as basic as any horror film. Three friends take a backpacking trip in Austraila, and are befriended by a knife wielding maniac. You are probably thinking, I have heard that before, and that is because you have. the film was good for about 10-15 minutes towards the end. The rest were just the characters talking about pointless topics, and nothing even remotely interesting. It was dull for the most part. "30,000 people are reported missing in Australia every year. 90 percent are found within a month. Some are never seen again." Wolf Creek is tagged as "based on true events". This statement is in the same vein as tagging the cult favourite 1974 horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as "based on true events". Essentially, the core of the concept of Wolf Creek is inspired by the serial killer Ivan Milat who brutally slaughtered backpackers from different parts of the world. Writer/director Greg McLean utilises these murders as the foundation for this low-budget Aussie horror film. Wolf Creek had me on the edge of my bed the whole time while watching it. I kind of expected it to be pretty tame, and lame at that but was pleasantly surprised with the suspense throughout the film.

Every time I thought something was going to happen, it didn't happen. When I least expected it, it did.

Don't be a fool like a fair few people, watching this movie thinking it's a true story. It's not a true story nor is it even based on true events in Australia.

Die Darsteller agieren glaubhaft, aber wie soft of in Horrorfilmen tragen eher Story und Inszenierung zum Gelingen bei. Beides ist Regisseur Greg McLean geglückt. Mit beeindruckenden Landschaftsaufnahmen des australischen Outbacks und einer sich langsam entwickelnde Liebesgeschichte zwischen zwei Hauptprotagonisten bringt er die Figuren dem Zuseher näher und wiegt ihn in Sicherheit. Nur einzelne geschickt gesetzte Szenen erzeugen ein zunehmendes Unbehagen. Als dann das Grauen losbricht ist man als Zuseher einerseits erleichtert aber auch schockiert. Gekonnt setzt die Inszenierung brutale Schockeffekte ohne zu übertreiben. Fazit: Ein kleiner australischer Horrofilm der zwar nichts Neues bietet aber doch unterhaltsam ist.
