Plotless, enchanting, bittersweet mood piece

"Happiness is not always the best way to be happy."

For his first outing as a director since 2002's Adaptation, director Spike Jonze has revisited the thin line separating reality and fantasy to adapt Maurice Sendak's beloved children's book Where the Wild Things Are. Creating a feature-length motion picture from this source material posed a unique challenge, since the book is only ... read more

Where the Wild Things Are is a movie future generations will be talking about if there is any cosmic and artistic justice in this world. Why? Because it strikes so deeply at the core of childhood’s fragile and mercurial psyche filled with gloriously beautiful images and heartfelt performances. This is not a children’s film but a film about childhood in every painful and joyous moment.

After hearing the book is a famous children's book, I had intensions to see the film adaptation. After only seeing some clips and still pictures, this film reminded me a lot of Bridge To Terabithia. It does have its similarities with Where The Wild Things Are but there are a lot of differences between the two. It is the feelings that you have for them that make them similar. It has nothing to do w... read more

Description: The first twenty minutes of this creative, bold, and thought-provoking screen adaptation of Maurice Sendak's immensely popular 1963 children's book rushes at us in a torrential stream of images, movements, and loud sounds. Nine-year-old Max (Max Records) chases the family dog, exerts his power over a fence in an imaginary game, digs a ... (more)

" The Ups: The first minutes of the film show a main child character with issues and anger problems that only a good psychologist can help or a kid with good imagination and self-insight that can change himself - luckily, we see how this one is of the latter. Great detailed looking monsters. It is a demanding film that tries to go a little deeper in a darker place than what is usual for what is basically a family movie. The Downs: It can be very hard to warm up to a main character that basical"

“Making a faithful and satisfying yet lengthy adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's tale may seem like an extremely hard undertaking, and yet Jonze pulled it off with a masterstroke: though the story was greatly altered from a sweet, innocent and simple children's tale to a complex, unconventional, mature and touching adult's story, the vision of the original story stayed unchanged in most aspects, and it proved to be an overall extremely impressive watch.

Where the Wild Things Are is my third Jonze film I've seen thus far: I saw prior to this Her and Adaptation, two incredible films with the former, in my opinion, being a masterpiece, and though I thought that this one was actually probably Jonze's weakest one I've seen (just have to see Being John Malkovich now), tha” read more

"Watched on: 8/1/13 Spike Jonze has taken a classic children's book and turned it into something so unique and cinematically perfect. The film is much darker and deeper than I was expecting and that's a good thing. The best part of this film is its look Jonze has made one of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen. Jonze could easily have taken the easy way out and made an easy to swallow and simple kids movie with dumb jokes and lots of cute and predictable scenes. Instead he went with somethi"

A good movie

“After 7 seven long years, Spike Jonze finally came up with a new directing effort and I was definitely eager to check it out. When I bought the DVD in France with its cute poster and since it was an adaptation of a children book, I thought it would be nice to watch it with my 7 year-old daughter. Wisely, I decided to check it out first on my own and within 5 minutes, I realized it was definitely nothing for her and that was the first failure of this movie in my opinion. I mean, it was way too dark and gloomy for the kids and since it really looked like a family feature, I really wonder who was actually the target audience in the end. I don't mean that it was a bad movie, not at all. It was actually pretty good and visually really interesting but from a sweet children book (which I haven't ” read more
